About

Hello, I’m Mary, a Scot who’s wound up in deepest Bavaria as a naturalized German citizen with a British–Portuguese–Canadian family. I write about all manner of topics, but I’m specially keen on tech, sustainable travel, language, and food – or anything to do with my other passion, knitting.

Language and how we use it has always been at the forefront of my career. Although I applied to study French, I ended up graduating from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in English Language, followed up with a masters in Technical Communication and Localization from the University of Strasbourg. I’ve been a language assistant, a teacher, a pedagogical manager, and a course coordinator, but have discovered that writing is where my true talents lie. Whether crafting a fresh article from scratch or polishing someone else’s work till it shines, I’m happiest when surrounded by the written word.

When I’m not putting pen to paper, you’ll find me knitting (probably something colourful for my daughter), eating crisps (salt and vinegar Tyrrell’s are my fave), or somewhere up at the top of a hill.
